    Resigned Commission in Union Army (April 15, 1865)
    Elected governor of Rhode Island (1866-67-68)
    Elected a US Senator from Rhode Island (1874-1881)

Why he might be annoying:

    He wore goofy facial hair and became the namesake for side burns.
    He left the military to develop a new rifle that the government deemed unworthy of funding (1852).
    During the battle of Antietem, he delayed a vital attack that allowed the Confederate troops to repulse the Union from Harper's Ferry. This became the Civil war's bloodiest single day battle (September 17, 1862).
    He formulated the plan that led to the Union loss at Fredricksburg (December 13, 1862).
    He failed to take Richmond a second time and bogged his men down in the rain (January 1863).
    He was saved from a seige by William Tecumseh Sherman after the Battle of Chickamauga (1863).
    During the battle of the crater, he volunteered a negro regiment to tunnel under an enemy fort and place explosives. This was over ruled by Meade (1864).
    The Battle of the Crater suffered heavy Union casualties.
    He twice declined command of the Union army.

Why he might not be annoying:

    Upon outbreak of the Civil War, he raised a regiment of which he was appointed colonel.
    After his military resignation, he occupied numerous railroad and industrial directorships.
    He was forced under orders to take command of the Union Army.
    He was popular as both a military man and a politician.
    He graduated from US military academy (1847).
    He served in the Mexican-American War and Indian Wars.
    He served during numerous major battles of the American Civil War.
