His album 'You're Under Arrest' was often criticized by Jazz purists for containing covers of Cyndi Lauper's 'Time After Time' and Michael Jackson's 'Human Nature.'

He added a Spanish-flavored sound to his music during his later years.
He was inducted in the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame (1979).
He said of his legacy: 'I know what I've done for music, but don't call me a legend.'
He's influenced an innumerable amount of musicians.
