Why he might be annoying
He is an unpopular figure in Greece.
He and his wife, Queen Anne-Marie, are cousins.
Ethnically, he is German-Danish, not Greek.
He smokes.
Greek politicians described him as 'a half-wit,' 'a moron,' and '[King] Paul's naughty little boy.'
He meddled in politics, causing instability in the Greek government.
His interference allowed the military to seize control in a coup.
He was photographed swearing in the new military dictatorship.
He fled Greece and then tried a coup of his own, which failed miserably.
In a 1974 election, only 31% of voters voted to keep the monarchy.
He still insists on calling himself a king and refuses to take a surname.
Why he might not be annoying
He was totally unprepared for the throne.
He was nicknamed 'The Smiling King.'
He won a gold medal in the 1960 Olympics for sailing.
He is a close friend of Prince Charles.
He is a godfather of Prince William.
