The Resume

    (October 7, 1952-October 7, 1989)
Premise: Teens dancing to popular Top 40 music with musical guest acts performing their hits
First aired live locally as 'Bandstand' in Philadelphia by Bob Horn and Lee Stewart
Horn and Stewart replaced by Dick Clark (July 9, 1956)
Purchased by ABC and name changed to 'American Bandstand' (August 5, 1957)
Went from live daily programming to taped weekly (Saturday afternoons) programming (September 7, 1963)
Moved to Los Angeles (February 8, 1964)
Clark replaced by David Hirsch and show became syndicated (September 19, 1987)
Barry Manilow created a new theme song for the show titled 'Bandstand Boogie' (1975)
B.B. King was not comfortable lip syncing and was the only musician allowed to perform live on the set
After the show became a weekly Clark missed just one taping and hand picked Donna Summer to fill in for him
Clark's toughest interview was Prince, who gave one word answers to his questions

Why American Bandstand might be annoying:

Horn was replaced, taking Stewart with him, after he was busted for a DUI.
The show had a huge turn around in the number of dancers employed - as teens tended to become adults and had to be replaced.
Clark did not allow the bands to play their songs, opting for cheesy lip syncing.
The 'Rate-A-Record' segment had teens rating news songs on a bizarre '35 to 98' scale, and 99% of the time when asked why they liked the song the reply was 'it's easy to dance to.'

Why American Bandstand might not be annoying:

They had hundreds of guest musicians, from Bill Haley & The Comets in the '50s to The Temptations in the '60s to Aerosmith in the '70s to 'Weird' Al in the '80s.
Its success spawned several other music/dance oriented shows such as 'Soul Train.'
The Village People performed 'Y.M.C.A.' and the teens spontaneously invented a dance to go along with it, establishing a perennial wedding reception favorite.
When Clark asked up and coming star Madonna what she would like to do 20 years from now, she famously answered - 'To rule the world.'
