The Resume
(September 26, 1881-October 28, 1957)
Born in Adelebsen, Germany
Opthalmologist turned gynecologist
Published studies of the IUD (intra-uterine device) for birth control (1929)
Why he might be annoying
He is sometimes credited with inventing the IUD, but the actual inventor was Dr. Carl Hollweg.
His research was suppressed because of Nazi opposition to birth control.
He was offered a chance to escape Germany (1934) but refused, apparently believing he would be safe since his clients included the wives of several Nazi officials.
The IUD did not come into widespread use until after his death.
He is best known to the public for his discovery of the G-spot, which many scientists doubt exists.
The G-spot in popular sex manuals is at a different location than the one Grafenberg described.
Why he might not be annoying
He wrote important papers on cancer metastasis and egg implantation.
His improved IUD design cut down on the incidence of pelvic inflammatory disease.
Due to its prevalence in China, the IUD has become the most widely used reversible method of birth control.
After the Nazis had imprisoned him for three years, Margaret Sanger paid a ransom so he could leave for the US.
He contributed his sexual history to the Kinsey Report.
