Why he might be annoying:

Even by the standards of pitchers, he was a notoriously bad hitter, once quipping, 'I never broke a bat until last year, when I was backing out of the garage.'
His 6'5 height and 165 pound weight prompted Billy Werber to say, 'He was so thin that if he turned sideways he would disappear from view.'
He had a reputation as a headhunter who deliberately threw at the batter.
He named one of his daughters Vernona.
His antics, such as calling time during Game 2 of the 1936 World Series so he could watch a plane flying overhead, got on the nerves of manager Joe McCarthy.

Why he might not be annoying:

Despite his poor hitting, he scored the first RBI in an All-Star Game (July 6, 1933).
He won the pitching triple crown twice, leading the AL in wins, winning percentage and ERA (1934,1937).
He set a World Series record, winning six games without a loss.
His plaque at Monument Park in Yankee Stadium says, 'Noted for his wit and his fastball, as he was fast with a quip and a pitch.'
Asked by a reporter 'Is it true that you'd throw at your own mother,' he replied 'Damn right I would. She's a good hitter.'
