The Resume
(June 9, 1954- )
Born in Hartford, Connecticut
British father, American mother
Based in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia
Member of the Sierra Club (1989–2006)
Officer of the Order of Canada (2005– )
Leader of the Green Party of Canada (2006– )
Why she might be annoying
She did not move to Canada until her late teens.
Her first federal election run was in 1980; her second was in 2006.
She chose the Central Nova riding to avoid facing any Liberal or New Democratic Party incumbents in the 2008 federal election (she wound up facing a Conservative superstar).
The other four candidates for Prime Minister (Stephen Harper, Stephane Dion, Jack Layton, Gilles Duceppe) did not initially want her involved in the traditional televised leaders’ debate that September.
To avoid a Liberal candidate in her own riding, she had to promise Dion she would not run a candidate in his riding.
Why she might not be annoying
Her mother opposed the anti-nuclear movement.
She is a close friend of Bill Clinton.
She opposed the use of aerial pesticides planned for the forests around Cape Breton Island. Her efforts led to the their provincewide abolition.
Though a devout Christian, she does not like mixing politics and religion.
She was allowed to participate in the leaders’ debate following ‘anti-democratic’ charges (‘the decision-making of a small group of network-TV executives’).
Despite not winning any seats in the 40th Parliament, she is pleased that the Green Party went from fringe movement to serious contender.
