Why he might be annoying
After being accused of helping throw the 1919 World Series, he was banned from baseball (1920).
He testified that he was involved in the series fix.
He is illiterate.
He is immortalized by a young fan pleading 'Say it aint so, Joe'
Why he might not be annoying
He batted left handed.
He claimed that even though he was given money to throw the 1919 world series, he didn't understand what the money was for.
He contends that during the series, he batted .375, played the outfield flawlessly (no errors) and threw out 5 runners, which may have qualified him as the best player of that 1919 series.
Many baseball historians point out that Jackson begged his manager to not allow him to play in the series, because he didn't want to be involved in a crooked scheme.
All eight players involved in the fix were found not guilty (although the gambler/scheme creator Arnold Rothstein may have corrupted the legal system).
He was offered $10,000 to throw the 1919 series, then offered $20,000, he refused both times.
He was most likely banned from baseball for not revealing the series fix, but he would probably have been killed if he tried.
