Biblical Character
    (circa 1540 BC-circa 1677 BC)
Appears in Genesis, the first book of the Old Testament
    Lived in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq)
    Originally called Sarei
Name changed to Sarah by God to mark his covenant with her
    Wife of Abraham
    Mother of Isaac
She may have been Abraham’s half sister or niece.
When she couldn't conceive with Abraham, she offered up her maid Hagar to him.
She laughed when she overheard a guest, an angel in disguise, say she would be a mother (well, she was ninety at the time).
She then lied to God about having laughed.
After she had Isaac, she made Abraham send Hagar and her son by him, Ishmael, into the wilderness to survive as best they could.
She was sad and bitter for years over her lack of children.
Hagar became disrespectful towards her after she gave birth to Ishmael.
God promised her a son, but made her wait a decade before she finally became a mother.
She was beautiful even as an old woman.
A pharaoh forced her to leave her husband to join his harem (he released her when an angel beat him every time he went near her).
She is praised in the New Testament for being faithful to God and a good wife.
