He grew up sheltered in a Mennonite family that discouraged his bike riding.
He was a mountain biking champion before he pursued road racing.
He was the third American to win the Tour de France.
He kept the US Tour de France win streak alive after Lance Armstrong's seventh straight win.
He made one of the biggest comebacks in Tour de France history, as at one point he was trailing by eight minutes and was counted out by many.
He won the race despite a hip aliment that eventually required replacement surgery.
