Why Belfast, Northern Ireland might be annoying
It failed to prepare adequate air-raid selters in World War II, with the result that it suffered the worst air raid outside of London, with nearly a thousand deaths (April 15, 1941).
Many of its houses lacked hot water and indoor toilets until the 1970s.
During the 'Troubles' (1969-98), violence between Protestants and Catholics claimed over 1500 lives.
The city remains highly segregated, with walls erected by the army, dubbed 'peace lines,' separating Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods.
Why Belfast, Northern Ireland might not be annoying
Until the end of World War II, it was one of the world's leading ship builders.
Since the Good Friday Agreement (1998), the city has undergone significant development and investment.
It was the only British destination in Frommer's 'Top 12 Destinations to Visit in 2009.'
BBC DJ Sara Cox said, 'If you haven't had a night out in Belfast, you haven't lived.'
