Victim

The Resume

    (July 7, 1935-March 13, 1964)
    Born in Brooklyn, New York
Birth name is Catherine Susan Genovese
Bartender at Ev's Eleventh Hour Club (Hollis, New York)
Stabbed in Kew Gardens, Queens by Winston Moseley
Died en route to Queens General Hospital

Why she might be annoying:

She was the only member of her immediate family to stay in the city following a murder witnessed by her mother (1954). The others moved to a Connecticut suburb.
She would often work into the wee hours of the morning — especially the night she died.
Though she was less than 100 feet away from her own apartment, she headed to a police call box instead.
A French woman who was a witness said, ‘I’m not the police and my English-speaking is not perfect.’ (The cops don’t have interpreters?)
Her name became synonymous with apathy (the Genovese syndrome) — and not just by civilians, as the investigating officers claimed.
The lieutenant in charge of the investigation was dumbfounded by the apathy of the witnesses (‘where they are in their homes, near phones, why should they be afraid to call the police?').
She was chosen entirely at random.
Her assailant was originally sentenced to death.

Why she might not be annoying:

    She loved Latin American music.
She was the oldest of five children.
Since the attack covered three separate areas over a long stretch, it was impossible to see or hear the attack in its entirety.
The New York City Police Department was already under extreme fire for its approach to handling emergencies.
Her death led to changes in phone reporting procedures at the NYCPD.
The exact location of her Lakeview Cemetery coffin has been kept secret on her family’s order.
Her sister said of Moseley, ‘He should die the way she did!’
Thanks in part to the family's efforts, Moseley was denied 12 consecutive parole bids related to her case and two others.
