U.S. Vice President

The Resume

    (August 27, 1865-April 23, 1951)
    Admitted to the bar (1886)
Winner of a Nobel Peace Prize for his work to restore and stabilize the German economy (1925)
Vice President of the United States under Calvin Coolidge (1925-1929)

Why he might be annoying:

He worked in a series of odd appointment jobs before being selected as a running mate for Calvin Coolidge.
He was the complete opposite of Calvin Coolidge. He was extremely outspoken and garrulous.
His catch phrase was 'Hell and Maria.'
With little success he tried to reform the rules of the Senate.
He upstaged Coolidge's Presidential inaugural address with his rambling speech concerning Senate ethics.
On his inauguration as Vice President, he went with the President to the White House rather than adjourning the Senate.
He refused to go to cabinet meetings as the Vice President before Coolidge even asked him to.
He was late at arriving at a tie vote over an appointment of Charles Warren as attorney general and as a result one of the Democrats had time to change his mind and vote against appointing Charles Warren. The change resulted in Coolidge losing an important appointment by one vote.
He was so disliked by Calvin Coolidge that his name is not mentioned at all in Coolidge's memoirs.

Why he might not be annoying:

He organized the 'Minute Men of the Constitution' to watch elections and prevent vote fraud in Chicago, a place which was very corrupt at the time.
    He was against filibusters.
He served in World War I.
He was very popular as a Vice President.
He had managed to start serious discussions about the nature of the rules of the Senate.
He was in national politics under McKinley when Coolidge was still a city council member in Northampton.
He was seen as a problem solver whereas Coolidge was seen as a problem avoider.
He wrote a list of five commandments to his successor.
Dawes Decalogue, or the Letter of a Self-made Has-Been to His Successor:
Don't steal the first page on Inauguration Day, and you may be invited to sit in the Cabinet
Don't be afraid to criticize the Senate. You know how much it needs it. The public likes it and the Senate thrives on it...
Don't try to change the Senate Rules.
Don't buck the President if you want to stay more than four year.
Don't do your sleeping in the day time.
