Why he might be annoying:

He studied medicine and forestry without getting a degree in either.
Lines like 'I'd sooner, except the penalties, kill a man than a hawk' prompted one critic to call him 'the Walt Whitman of misanthropy.'
His popularity went into a sharp decline after he opposed US entry into World War II, which included equating the leadership on both sides. ('To take their rank in history/Roosevelt, Hitler and Guy Fawkes/Hanged above the garden walks')
Eventually, Random House added their own forward to his works, essentially saying 'We may publish him, but we do not hold the same opinions.'
He disliked re-reading his poems, saying 'It is a pleasure to write, but after a thing is written I hate to see it again.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He built his own stone house and an adjoining four-story tower.
His poems about nature made him an icon of environmentalists.
He said people were too indifferent to 'the astonishing beauty of things.'
He was a favorite poet of Charles Bukowski and Czeslaw Milosz.
He said, 'I decided not to tell lies in verse. Not to feign any emotions that I did not feel.'
