She was once the featured singer at a club owned by Wilt Chamberlain.
She sang jingles for KFC, Avon, and Chevrolet.
Her biggest hits were only on the dance and R&B charts.
Why she might not be annoying
Her most famous hit, 'Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But the Rent,' was a 1980's women's anthem. The lyrics include, 'No romance without finance' and 'You got to have a j.o.b. if you wanna be with me.'
She sang background for Aretha Franklin and Kenny Loggins, among others.
She was also a prolific songwriter, composing tunes for Sister Sledge and Isaac Hayes.
She was one of the first artists to raise funds for AIDS charities.
Uterine cancer took her life.
