Roving correspondent for the Scripps-Howard newspaper chain (1935-45)
Won a Pulitzer Prize for his World War II reporting (1944)
Wrote the books 'Ernie Pyle in England' (1941), 'Here Is Your War' (1943) and 'Brave Men' (1944)
Killed in the Battle of Okinawa

He left college a semester short of graduating.
He constantly doubted the quality of his writing.
After his depressed wife attempted suicide, he divorced her to 'shock her into realizing that she had to face life like other people.'
A year later, he remarried her by proxy (1943).
His last column was considered so depressing, it was not published at the time.

Scripps-Howard editor-in-chief G.B. Parker said his writing had 'a Mark Twain quality that knocked my eye out.'
He wrote about the war from the perspective of the common soldier.
Congress passed a law giving soldiers 50% extra pay for combat service in response to one of his columns.
His last words, addressed to a soldier, were 'Are you alright?'
The inscription on the monument marking the location of his death reads, 'At this spot the 77th Infantry Division lost a buddy.'
