Why he might not be annoying
Despite much gossip about him, no real evidence of improper conduct with children has ever surfaced.
He was bullied as a child.
He studied to become a minister, but quit because he didn't believe that non-Christians went to hell.
His children's books didn't have moral agendas (very unusual for the time).

Some of his nonsense words, like 'mishmash' and 'chortle,' have become established in the English language.
