The Resume

Why he might be annoying:

He was nicknamed ‘the Prince of Chintz’ for his heavy use of floral patterns.
His non-stop collecting gained him another nickname, ‘the King of Clutter,’ (‘I am the original hoarder.’)
One of his more derivative early projects prompted decorator John Fowler to complain, ‘Young man, if you’re going to copy me, you could’ve done a better job.’
He licensed his name for use on everything from bed linens and tableware to telephones and potpourri, leading Sister Parrish to denounce him as ‘practically a whore.’
His assistants tended to come and go quickly, thank to his perfectionism and outbursts of temper.
He was a practical joker who owned a plastic cockroach that he liked to drop on the floor at parties to see if he could elicit a scream from any of the guests.

Why he might not be annoying:

He said, ‘My father always gave me a hard time, and that’s what makes you an overachiever.’
He and Mark Hampton were hired to redecorate Blair House, the presidential guest house: ‘They wanted it to look like a house, not a hotel.’ (1985)
As chair of the event, he transformed the Winter Antiques Show into a high-society extravaganza.
An editor of ‘Architectural Digest’ noted, ‘Whenever we showed a Mario interior on the cover, newsstands sales went up.’
After he redecorated Mariah Carey’s Manhattan duplex, it was noted that he was almost certainly the only designer to have the same project featured in both Architectural Digest and MTV’s Cribs.
