His defense team is trying to portray him as a victim of brainwashing (this theory has been dismissed as junk science by most who have examined it).
He boasted to police about shooting (or helping Muhammad shoot) over a dozen people in the Washington, DC area.
He laughed at the victims and said he would do it again.
He entered the US illegally with his mom, was arrested, then set free by the INS against the recommendation of the Border Patrol.

His high school classmates described him as opinionated and polite.
His father (who last saw him in 1998) said that: 'He was a happy kid, good kid, liked school, never got into any trouble.'
