    Apart from King, co-wrote 'Who Put the Bomp (In the Bomp, Bomp, Bomp),' 'I've Gotta Use My Imagination,' 'Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To),' 'Tonight, I Celebrate My Love,' 'Miss You Like Crazy' and 'Saving All My Love for You'
    Recorded the albums 'It Ain't Exactly Entertainment' (1973) and 'Back Room Blood' (1995)
    With King was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (1987) and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1990)
    His career as a performer flopped.
    While married to King, he fathered a daughter with singer Earl-Jean McCrea (1964).
    He was bipolar, and the condition worsened when he used hallucinogenics in the mid-60s.
    He was eventually hospitalized and underwent electroshock therapy.
    He wrote nearly 60 Top 40 hits, including seven chart-toppers.
    King said, 'His understanding of human nature transcended gender' -- explaining how he could write the lyrics for '(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.'
    Critic Anthony DeCurtis said, 'He set a standard for literacy without being a show-off about it.'
    Early during Beatlemania, John Lennon said he hoped he and Paul McCartney could become 'the Goffin-King of England.'
