Pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals (1938), Pittsburgh Pirates (1944-47) and Brooklyn Dodgers (1948-54)
Five time All-Star (1945,1949-52)
Led the National League in strikeouts (148 in 1945)

Why he might be annoying:

His stint with the Cardinals lasted only one game before he was sent to the minors.
While coaching a girls high school basketball game, he got into a brawl and suffered a skull fracture (1945).
Afterwards, his head hurt whenever he flew, so he had to travel to games by train.
He said the secret to his longevity on the mound was 'clean living and the spitball.'

Why he might not be annoying:

Despite his country bumpkin image, he was actually a college graduate who had taught mathematics.
He was married to his wife Mozee for 64 years until her death.
Ralph Branca said, 'He was real smart and real crafty on the mound.'
He pitched a shutout in Game Two of the 1949 World Series despite being hit in the right forefinger by a line drive, which caused so much swelling holes had to be drilled in his fingernail between innings.
