    It was struck by an F3 tornado, destroying 150 homes, during the state's largest tornado outbreak (April 16, 2011).
    Of all the US cities named for Lafayette, it is the only one that he visited (March 4-5, 1825).
    Babe Ruth hit the first home run of his pro baseball career during an exhibition game at Fayetteville Fairgrounds (1914).
    It was named the top job market in the country for recent college grads (2011).
    'Where to Retire' magazine placed it on their list of 'five star' towns.
    It is a three-time winner of the National Civic League's All-American City Award (1985,2001,2011).
