    Born in Lafayette, Indiana
    Played both football and basketball for the University of Notre Dame (1923–26)
    Head basketball coach for Saint Vincent College (1928–32), Xavier (1933–43), and the University of Notre Dame (1944–45)
    Head football coach at Saint Vincent College (1926–31), Xavier University (1936–43), and the University of Iowa (1945), Buffalo Bills (1949), Baltimore Colts (1950), Ottawa Rough Riders (1951–54) and the BC Lions (1956–58)
    He never played a game in the professional ranks.
    He recorded a 1-11 record for the Colts in his lone season with the team.
    His teams frequently finished no higher then third place in their conference.
    He was fired by the Lions after an 0-5 start, which ended his coaching career.
    He posted a 71–66–5 record as a college football coach and a 152–115 record as a college basketball coach.
    He guided the Rough Riders to the Grey Cup championship in his first season as a CFL head coach.
    He served as a captain for the football team at Notre Dame.
    In addition to his duties serving as the basketball and football coach at Xavier, he also served as the head coach for the school's baseball and golf teams.
