He went to Uruguay during World War I to avoid military service.
Despite being a socialist, he owned an electrical appliance factory.
The factory went bankrupt following the 1929 stock market crash, leaving him over $50,000 in debt.
His song 'Ain't It the Truth' was cut from the film 'Cabin in the Sky' for expressing skepticism about religion.

Growing up, his parents could not afford a bed, so he and his sister slept in two chairs pushed together.
He was referred to as 'Broadway's social conscience.'
He was blacklisted for his socialist beliefs.
When MGM urged him to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee, he wrote, 'Guilt by association is an European doctrine which has always been repudiated in this country and it is about time that decent liberals and good Americans fought back.'
'Over the Rainbow' topped both the RIAA's 'Songs of the Century' list and the American Film Institute's '100 Years, 100 Songs.'
